On June 5, 2024, Governor Mike DeWine signed an executive order banning the sale and use of nine synthetic opioids, known as nitazenes, in Ohio, classifying them as Schedule I controlled substances. These potent and dangerous compounds, originally developed as potential morphine alternatives but never approved for medical use, are increasingly found in Ohio’s illicit drug supply. He added that nitazenes are often more potent than other Schedule I opioids like heroin or fentanyl and significantly increase the risk of unintentional drug poisonings and deaths. Governor DeWine was also one of the first governors to sign an executive order classifying xylazine as a Schedule III controlled substance.
